The History of Alpha Lipoic Acid

It was investigated in 1930's. The story began with a component of potato extract that was required to help certain bacteria grow. Therefore, the so-called "potato growth factor" was Alpha Lipoic Acid.

Around 1950, it was observed that yeast extracts had an unidentified compound that could allow Streptococcus feacalis to oxidize the carbohyrate pyruvate to acetate. It led researchers to make a conclusion in 1952 that the compound they were studying was not just a simple fatty acid, it was called Alpha Lipoic Acid, formally characterized later in 1957.
